How to Stop Swaying in the Golf Swing

A sway is when your hips slide sideways away from the target in the backswing instead of rotating. It looks like moving off the ball. It is easy to do and very hard to recover from, because you have to slide back before you can strike the ball.
What it does
- Inconsistent contact: the center of your swing moves, so the low point moves with it.
- Fat shots when you do not get back, and thin shots when you over-slide.
- Lost power, because you swing with the arms instead of coiling the body.
Why it happens
- Trying to load weight into the trail side by pushing the hips out.
- Limited hip rotation, so the hips slide to find more turn.
- Weight on the outside of the trail foot, which pushes the knee and hip outward.
- A tall setup with little knee flex.
How to see it
On face-on video, draw a vertical line on your screen against the outside of your trail hip at address. At the top of the backswing, your hip should still be close to that line. If it has moved well past it, you have swayed.
Drills that help
Stick outside the trail hip
- Push an alignment stick into the ground just outside your trail hip.
- Make slow backswings and turn without pushing the stick away from you.
- Keep your trail knee flexed and let the hip rotate behind you.
What you should feel: You turn in a barrel rather than sliding along a track.
Trail knee hold
- Hold your trail knee at the same bend you had at address through the backswing.
- Turn your chest as far as you can in that stable base.
- Make half swings with that feel and then build up.
What you should feel: The turn comes from the hips and chest, not from a lateral shift.
Not sure this is your problem?
Drills only work if you are fixing the right thing. Film your swing from down the line and face-on, and a PGA coach will tell you what is actually happening and give you one drill to work on.
Get a coach to look at your swing · $35What a coach looks for on video
- Hip position over the trail foot at the top of the swing
- Trail knee flex through the backswing
- Whether the head and chest stay centered or drift
- Hip rotation compared with shoulder rotation
- Recovery of weight on the way down
That is the difference between guessing from a guide and knowing from your own swing. Two short videos are enough for a coach to check all of this.

Common questions
Should my hips move at all in the backswing?
A small amount of lateral movement is natural, but the main motion is rotation. A large slide is a sway.
Is swaying the same as a reverse pivot?
No. A sway is the hips sliding away from the target. A reverse pivot is the weight and spine tilt moving toward it.
